The Richard R. Riedel Typescript
Richard R. Riedel was a member of Conwell's Grace Baptist Church congregation. He is usually listed as one of the first seven students who were the inspiration for Temple College. Some time after his death in 1920 and Russell Conwell's death in 1925, Riedel's widow and son tried to gather together all the information that they could recall concerning the founding of Temple College. They list some of the names that Mr. Riedel remembered as being among the original students. Russell Conwell often mentioned that he began tutoring students in 1884. Charles M. Davies, a printer and a Deacon in Conwell's church is most often cited as the first student. Many people who have written about the college's early history mention that seven students came to Russell Conwell in 1887 and the college grew from that meeting. The Riedel account begins with a class in 1887.
